Neenah Biotech Firm Making Big Strides
— Products based on age-old natural health remedies —

Neenah, Wis. (Jul 21, 2009) — A small Neenah biotechnology firm is venturing into food enhancement and anti-bacterial products based on its head's mainstay research into contemporary applications drawn from ancient medicinal remedies.

The steps are the latest in a series of biotechnological successes for Arun Chatterji, president and chief executive officer of Ayurvedic-Life International, and his business partner, Dennis Torkko, executive vice president. The company has made promising strides into therapies for insulin-deficient Type 2 diabetes sufferers, but still is far off from getting FDA approval for a prescription drug to deal with the condition.

One of the firm's newest products, with the trademark name of Bioster, is an all-natural and edible bio-emulsifier derived from a plant. It is listed on the FDA's GRAS (generally recognized as safe) list, and incorporates a nanoparticle semiconductor technology.

"This allows fast marinating (20-30 minutes) of lesser cuts of meat and poultry and produces flavorful and juicy steaks as enjoyable as rib-eye, T-bone and New York strip but at a fraction of the cost of expensive steaks," Chatterji said.

Torkko was excited by the far-reaching uses for the product, which also promises rich-tasting ice cream.

"The interesting thing about the Bioster product is that many of the products it can be incorporated into to enhance its texture, flavor and performance are (from) companies based in the Midwest, as contrasted with our diabetes project where most of the farmers are all over the world," he said.

Another product with great promise, an all-natural antimicrobial with the trademark name Bopega, can be used for the dairy, food, paper and health care industries, Chatterji said.

In the company's tests, samples of bread and quiche treated with the Bopega preparation were unaffected by mold and bacteria after up to two years, while the untreated samples were completely consumed, giving them the look of molasses, the company said.

Ayurvedic has gone to market through a licensee with OmSanA, a dietary supplement. The active ingredient is an aqueous extract of the Gymnema sylvestre leaf, an ancient woody climbing plant that grows naturally in the Indian subcontinent. OmSanA is billed as maintaining healthy blood sugar and cholesterol levels already within the normal range. It's available at Morton Drugs, Festival Foods, nutrition centers and natural health stores throughout the Fox Valley.

Chatterji said he and Torkko have put substantial amounts of money into the company, and have profited from licensing the technology to other firms and sale of proprietary products through the licensees. They depend heavily outsourced labor and maintain dealings with tribes in India, who still harvest the Gymnema sylvestre leaves from the vine.

Chatterji, who said he was born into a privileged family, was introduced to the Santal people in east-central India as a boy of 8 by his grandfather, a respected man of means like Chatterji's father. Chatterji felt equally privileged to have met and frolicked with tribal people at the historic outing in 1948, which proved to be his first education to an ancient folk remedy.

It would be many years later that Chatterji patented the extraction technology and garnered the proprietary compound from the vine.

Clinical test results reported in a June 2007 edition of the journal of the American Diabetes Association suggest that the extract may offer an effective therapy for insulin-deficient Type 2 diabetes.
